9 Eye Care Tips for the New Year
The health of your eyes is imperative for good health. Good vision is something that we often take for granted until there is an issue. However, the good news is that there are many things you can do to keep your eyes healthy. Follow these eye care tips and you will protect your eyes and your vision your whole life.
1. Annual Comprehensive Eye Exam
The National Eye Institute (NEI) recommends an annual exam for everyone, regardless of whether you need vision correction. This review must include eye dilation. That way, your doctor can put together a complete report.
2. Family’s Eye Health History
We all know it is important to talk with family about health history. But, don’t forget to ask them about their eye health. And, not just whether they need vision correction, but any other conditions or issues. It helps determine if you are at a higher risk for developing any conditions or diseases.
3. Eat Right
Eating a healthy balanced diet is imperative for good health. Eating foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants will also improve your eye health.
4. Maintain Healthy Weight
Being overweight increases your risk of developing metabolic disorders and diseases such as diabetes. Diabetes can lead to other conditions, including diabetic eye disease or glaucoma. Talk to your doctor if you need help with a weight loss program.
5. Quit Smoking (or Never Start)
There are almost too many reasons to list here as to why you should not smoke. Some research links smoking to an increased risk of developing macular degeneration, cataracts, and optic nerve damage. This is not just one of the most important eye care tips, but best for overall health!
6. UV Protective Sunglasses
While sunglasses are fashionable, their most important function is protecting your eye’s from harmful UV rays. When shopping for sunglasses make sure they provide 99 to 100 percent protection from both UV-A and UV-B radiation.
7. Workplace Eye Safety
If your job requires wearing protective eyewear, make sure you wear the appropriate type every time, at all times. Encourage your co-workers to do the same.
8. Rest Your Eyes
If you spend a significant time in front of a television or computer screen, your eyes are no doubt fatigued. Frequent breaks will help reduce eye strain. Consider the 20-20-20 Rule: every 20 minutes look 20 feet ahead of you for 20 seconds.
9. Clean Contact Lenses Properly
Make sure to disinfect your contact lenses accordingly and replace them as recommended. In addition, always wash your hands thoroughly before handling your contacts. Doing so will decrease your risk of infection.
